Splittin’ Eights

This is the third post in the Nairobi Casino Adventures stream.

“Always split aces and eights. Always!” Mitch was emphatic. His pupils were dilated. Maybe it was the dim lights in the casino.

“I can see why I should always split aces but why eights?” Hughie confessed.

“Ok, maybe not the eights, especially if the dealer has a ten or ace.”

“But you just said always split eights.”

“I did. Listen, you got to feel the situation. It really does depend on how hot the deck is?” Mitch was getting flush in the cheeks. “Sometimes I don’t even split aces when the dealer has a ten, or an ace”

“It depends on the situation?” Hughie said sarcastically.

Mitch failed to detect Hughie’s humor. “Exactly! You know, it’s not even the feeling. You gotta know the count, man, the count.”

“The count?” Hughie was thoroughly confused.

“The count. Tens and face cards are good for us and bad for the house! The more tens left in the deck the more money we should risk.”

The dealer snapped out the cards. Hughie looked down and saw two eights. The dealer had an ace. Hughie looked over at Mitch.

Mitch smirked with confidence. “You know what to do.”
